Having Another Episode

I dreamt of you again last night

You texted me out of the blue

Told me you bought a house on Long Island with a pool

You asked me to visit in February for a day and a night

I said I've been listening to Melodrama lately

It reminds me of you

And of course I'll go

My eyes opened to pitch black

And orange block letters blinking 2:00

I was wide awake, wired, hot, euphoric

How fascinating, I thought

I'm having one of my episodes again

That must be why I'm dreaming of you

This is the state I was in when you were really here

When you were really here

I consulted the tarot cards

And went to Salem and saw a psychic named Dave

At the shop they said Dave won't be in today

Which made it really feel like fate

When he walked through the door a moment later

Dave told me things I already knew about myself

So I presume it was accurate, what he said about you:

You are not good with money

But great at multitasking

You are full of grandiose ideas

And you need someone keep you on the ground

He wrote in scrawling handwriting, all-caps

I took his notes home with me in my pocket

Though I'd already committed every word to memory

Really, we only met a few times

So which was more absurd:

My seeing a psychic?

Or your naming of our red-headed children?

I suppose everything looks like a crow when you're a fox

And everything looks like a fox when you're a hunter

I saw a picture of you, how you're looking lately

You hair all greyed makes your eyes look more blue

I told my students the whole story

But left out the tarot cards and Salem and Dave

I said, I was crazy then

They asked if I'm still like that

I shook my head

Then remembered the dream and Long Island and Melodrama and the pool

And almost burst out laughing

Because of course I'm still like that

But I'm a role model now

With a narrative

And too old to admit I'm having episodes again

The fox in folklore has well-known associations of being a trickster and smooth talker. The Beguiler quilt depicts a sly looking fox glancing over its shoulder. In “Having another episode,” my present-day narrator self has a moment of self-awareness. She realizes that while Beguiler was in fact living up to their name, they were not the only person acting out of control. While Beguiler was like a fox seeking its next prey, I was a hunter of foxes and would have spiraled into extremes with any potential romantic partner who matched my hypomanic energy. At this point in my narrative, I begin to reflect more thoroughly on my role in conflicts and the ways in which I have and haven’t changed in the years since they occurred.
